There’s a rumor going around that a sequel to last year’s Marvel’s Spider-Man is coming “sooner than we think”. And as usual, I gotta wonder if it’ll affect Insomniac’s other series, Ratchet & Clank, in any way.
So this said Rumor started about a week or so ago when Imran Khan said during the latest Kinda Funny Gamecast ” I know too much about (Marvel’s spider-Man 2), so I can’t speculate too much. I think a Spider-Man 2 will come sooner than we think” he also mentions a “Christmas 2021 release window”.
Now as with any rumor, I’d advise taking this with a grain of salt. But with the massive success of the 1st Spider-Man game (3.3 Million copies sold in 3-days, 13+million as of July 2019). Which made it Insomniac Games’ fastest, best-selling game in their library (originally R&C 2016 held that title). So it’s kind of a given that Sony would want a sequel.
Another thing to note, back in August of this year, Sony had acquired Insomniac Games as part of Playstation Worldwide Studios. During that announcement, it was mentioned that both Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank are “Vital IP’s”.
So there’s plenty enough of a reason for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to be happening. But 2021? That seems kind of early considering that it took 4-years for Insomniac to make the 1st one, starting in 2014 (same year Insomniac announced the Ratchet & Clank PS4 Re-Imagining). Assuming that they immediately started after finishing the last one, it would’ve been 3-years instead. Which in turn would be a PS5 game (since it’s a year into the systems launch) rather than a PS4 game.
And all this bears to question, if it’s even true that is. Would we have to wait longer for a new Ratchet & Clank game? I would say yes, but also no. Because at the same time, Insomniac is very capable of handling multiple projects at once. Like I mentioned earlier, they juggled Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank PS4 (although a smaller team than Spidey) at the same time. On top of that, 4-other games that released in 2016 with R&C PS4.
Now that Insomniac is a Playstation studio, this means that all their focus is now directed to only Playstation Exclusives like Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank. Meaning, No PC games, No Xbox games or anything else outside of Playstation.
With that said, we did have rumors earlier this year of a new Ratchet & Clank game coming to PS4. But with the PS5 being so close to launching, I’m thinking that the next R&C will be on the PS5 instead.
Again, provided that this rumor is true, then this could mean that Insomniac is already making the transition to next-gen hardware. It’s likely that both Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank will be getting new games for the system.
Another interesting thing that I noticed is that this particular Spider-Man rumor popped up just a few days before Playstation announced their new State of Play that’s set to begin tomorrow (6 AM Pacific/ 9 AM EST). I’m fully aware that Playstation made it very clear for us to Not expect any next-gen plans in this episode.
But what if this new Spider-Man game is a cross-gen title? Releasing on both the PS4 & the PS5. Not usually Playstation or Insomniac’s style, but you never know.
Seeing as how Playstation likes to announce their exclusive games years before it even launches. It would make sense for Sony to announce it during the State of Play or even The Game Awards 2019 if they intend on releasing it during the 2021 season. Which would give the game about 2-years of advertising, just like the 1st. To an extent, same happened for R&C PS4.
Just be sure to keep expectations low for tomorrow’s State of Play, especially when it comes to Sly Cooper, R&C and of course Spider-Man. I just don’t want anyone to be disappointed if none of these show up this time. I am in no way saying with 100% certainty that any of these will be there. But with Spider-Man, I’m just saying that there’s a definite possibility (despite this being a rumor). Nothing else, nothing more.
