E3 2018 Recap: Sonic, Sly Cooper, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Spider-Man & Lots More

With E3 2018 officially over, it is now time to recap at least most of what happened (and in some cases didn’t happen) before or during E3 2018. So without further ado let’s get started.

So first up I’ll be discussing the stuff that wasn’t shown. One of which is Sly Cooper, we didn’t get anything regarding the TV show or Sly 5. Why does Sony keep doing this to the Sly Cooper community? We’ve waited about a year now for something on the show and Sony gives us nothing. Nor for anything regarding Sanzaru Games’ secret project. Now with the show back in development, it could be a reason why nothing was at E3 2018, but they could’ve still gave us some info here. It doesn’t stop there, Sega didn’t even mention or confirm Sonic Boom Season 3, now I can see their reason because of Sonic Mania Adventures’ remaining two parts. Plus we didn’t even get to see a trailer for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which doesn’t make any sense especially since the Crash N-Sane Trilogy has gotten E3 trailers two years in a row. Such a missed opportunity on Activision’s part.

Now that we got that out of the way, lets get into what we do know. First up is the tons of Spyro Reignited Trilogy gameplay footage that we got both at E3 2018 and from Activision’s website. Now I already discussed these in the previous article. So far we got footage from Tree Tops, Artisans, Magic Crafters, Toasty and Sunny Flight. Plus Stone Hill if you count the Twitter and IGN pre-E3 footage.

Onto Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy, yes the trilogy was featured at E3 again this year. But this time showing the other platforms and the Future Tense DLC, which is based on a scrapped level called Waterfall. Now this level features a different color tone and higher difficulty to the future levels in Crash 3 Warped. Future Tense will be pre-loaded onto the Xbox One and Switch versions, while it will be DLC for PS4, no word on how it will be for PC.

Next up we got a trio of Sonic games releasing this year, the first of which is Sonic Mania Plus. Which features more levels and the ability to play as Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Squirrel. Now at E3 2018, Sega had a battle competition for both Mania Plus and Team Sonic Racing where players would have to, I guess race to the finish.

The second of Sonic releases is Team Sonic Racing, which I’ve already covered a number of times. Did get a E3 trailer, which showed more gameplay, great Marza CGI, new Crush 40 track and confirmation of Rooftop Run as a track. But no new characters were confirmed in the trailer outside of Team Sonic, Team Dark, Eggman and Amy.

Then Sonic makes a comeback in the wildly popular Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch. Knuckles also appears as a assist trophy.

Now onto Spider-Man PS4, which keeps looking better and better with every bit of newly released footage. This demo footage from E3 2018, shows the RAFT, a prison for villains that Spider-Man has helped capture over the last eight years. Villains seen in the demo Include; Electro, Scorpion, Vulture, Rhino and Mister Negative. Now the way Insomniac Games made this game feel like a complete cinematic experience was really well done. The transition between cutscenes and gameplay is really smooth, like when a cutscene is over your thrust right back into the action and you still think it’s a cutscene. Now that’s a complete overhaul of the black screen separating the gameplay and cutscenes in Ratchet & Clank PS4. Then you have probably one of the most combat systems ever made for a game. Even everything in this game looks and feels smooth and truly delivers a cinematic experience that satisfies.

Jurassic World Evolution has just launched over the course of E3 2018 and was featured there. Of course the game launched as digital with the physical editions releasing next month. The launch trailer, that was narrated by Jeff Goldblum’s character, Dr. Ian Malcom in the Jurassic movies, was nicely done. There will also be a DLC pack for Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, which would release alongside the film and probably feature the Indoraptor.

Tetris Effect is a PS4 & PSVR exclusive, releasing this Fall. Now I have no idea what’s so special about this Tetris game that it has to be exclusive. Normally Tetris is multi-platform and mobile. But anyway it’s an announcement nonetheless.

Thanks goes to CrystalBlazier for the above trailer. Skylanders Ring of Heroes was at E3 2018 with a trailer and open BETA test currently available on Google Play. It is the Skylanders mobile game that was announced earlier in the year. In the game you can use the Skylanders characters and upgrade them to their awakened forms to defeat villains across Skylands. Now this game with Skylanders Academy are probably the last thing we’ll see of Skylanders for a long while, as focus is being put into Spyro Reignited Trilogy, or classic Spyro if you will.

Now I’m going to discuss some Sonic 2019 movie news. Now we do have some locations that filming is going to take place in Vancouver. A town called Ladysmith and on Highway 19, which is between Courtney and Qualicum Beach. Then one of the plot details for the film is this “The movie’s plot is about a small town coming together to help the sheriff save Sonic – a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog that can reach the speed of sound – from the government chasing after him”.

Now I’m for Sonic being chased down by a government agency like G.U.N. from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow The Hedgehog. But what I’m worried about is in these descriptions they seem to be putting more focus on the human characters than the Sonic characters. I think this might just be another version of Sonic X and the two worlds merging together. But where is Tails, Knuckles, Amy or even Eggman in any of these plot details? Now I can understand keeping characters like Shadow, Chaos, Blaze, Metal Sonic or Infinite hidden until last minute, but they aren’t even naming the more common characters. Also another plot summary calls Sonic a juvenile delinquent, now I don’t know about you guys but that doesn’t really sound like Sonic, unless that’s how Tom sees him. Also describing Sonic as hyper-active and off-the-wall, also doesn’t seem to fit into what we know about Sonic. Unless this is an origin story for Sonic, which would possibly retell certain elements from certain games, like the Adventure games, Shadow, etc.

We’ll just have to wait and see on this one, but we could see something for Sly Cooper TV, Sonic Boom Season 3 and the Sonic Movie next month at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC for short). As Sega has attended the past two years, now I think Sony has participated in it too, I’m not too sure on this.

That’s about all I got for now, so stay tuned for more video gaming news coming at the speed of sound. Don’t forget to Like, Comment, Subscribe, Share or Follow for more videos and articles, as I’ve got more on the way. Until then you can catch me over at these places
